We left Empire Island once the storm had cleared and headed for the Mimir mainland without anyone stopping or harassing us in any way, which was too fucking easy, but I’d take a win just to see that hovering city behind us.

After landing, I took Fitz to a waterhome and used my comms’ local signal to nudge Fran. She’d know where to meet. There was only one waterhome she’d never forget. Mimir had once been a secret base of operations for the Fenrir Nine. I’d smuggled guns here for years, with only a slap on a back and a paycheck in my account. The bars were good, the people straight-talkers, and water was everywhere to wash away all the sins.

The waterhomes were all the same—a large living area surrounded by bedrooms and a kitchen. They lined the boardwalks, each one its own village on stilts stretching out to sea. I’d always liked the place, even if it came with a shit ton of bad memories.

As I opened the balcony doors leading off the main living room, I peered over the edge into the water below, half expecting to find the decayed remains of the guy Bruno had sent to kill Fran. The body was gone. Maybe the fish had eaten it. Or, more likely, Creet, my old Fenrir Nine contact, had dealt with it. That all seemed like years ago, not a few cycles.

Mimir’s purplish sky was calm now that the storm had cleared. I gripped the rail and breathed in, fighting off too many memories. Fran would be here soon. I’d tell her about the synth. We’d get off this rock, check out the unmanned section of Empire Island, and get the fuck out of here before any more shit hit the fan. It all sounded easy enough.

My wrist comms strummed a reminder of the earlier message. Aware of the risk but also concerned it could be Bren, I tapped the screen and blinked at the words floating white on black.

Caleb,

Don’t

Let

Me

…

It ended right there, unfinished.

Each word hit like a fist in the gut, stealing the air right out of me, along with a whole ton of feelings I’d kept buried for almost six cycles. My heart beat hot in my throat. I glanced behind me, almost expecting One to be standing there, but Fitz was the only one in the main living area, rearranging scattered cushions like their display mattered.

One wasn’t here. She’d died. She’d died locked behind a pressure door to keep Chen Hung from escaping. I’d watched her die, watched every excruciating inch of ice take her.

I read the message again, and all the mental walls came crumbling down.

Fuck this planet and fuck whoever had sent the message.

I tore the comms free and pitched it overarm into the rippling waters, where it landed with a distant plop.

With it gone, more panic gripped me. I wanted it back, almost enough to dive over the edge and go find it. Emotion had crawled up my throat to where Aleksey’s fingers had cut off my air, just like Chen Hung’s had before him.
